At the same time, the river begins to leave behind some of the rocks, sand, and other solid material it collected upstream. Instead, it begins to wind from side to side in looping bends called meanders. As the slope of its course flattens, the river cuts less deeply into its bed. Rapids and waterfalls are common to rivers, particularly near their sources.Įventually, the river flows to lower land. The river carves a narrow, V-shaped valley. ![]() Little by little, a river tears away rocks and soil along its bed, and carries them downstream. These break apart, and the pieces that are carried in the moving water scrape and dig into the river bottom, or bed. ![]() A swift current can move even large boulders. The current is usually strongest near the river’s source. The movement of water in a river is called a current. The steeper the slope of a river, the faster the river moves and the more energy it has. The energy of flowing river water comes from the force of gravity, which pulls the water downward. This process is called weathering or erosion. state of Arizona, were sculpted by rivers over time. Many landforms, like the Grand Canyon in the U.S. The flowing water of a river has great power to carve and shape the landscape. Many of the largest rivers empty into the ocean. Here, the river empties into another body of water-a larger river, a lake, or the ocean. A river’s watershed includes the river, all its tributaries, and any groundwater resources in the area. A river system is also called a drainage basin or watershed. Together, a river and its tributaries make up a river system. For instance, the Amazon River receives water from more than 1,000 tributaries. It is also fed by other streams, called tributaries. Precipitation and groundwater add to the river’s flow. From its source, a river flows downhill as a small stream. The source of the Danube River is a spring in the Black Forest of Germany. A spring bubbling out of the ground can also be the headwaters of a river. state of Minnesota, the source of the Mississippi River. A river’s source could be a lake with an outflowing stream, such as Lake Itasca in the U.S. The source could be melting snow, such as the snows of the Andes, which feed the Amazon River. ![]() The source may be a melting glacier, such as the Gangotri Glacier, the source of the Ganges River in Asia. The beginning of a river is called its source or headwaters. Yet all rivers have certain features in common and go through similar stages as they age. Anatomy of a River No two rivers are exactly alike. The water cycle constantly replenishes Earth’s supply of freshwater, which is essential for almost all living things. The movement of water between land, ocean, and air is called the water cycle. This freshwater feeds rivers and smaller streams. Clouds carry moisture over land and release it as precipitation. One of the most important things they do is carry large quantities of water from the land to the ocean. Approximately one-fifth of all the freshwater entering the oceans comes from the Amazon. There is no debate, however, that the Amazon carries m ore water than any other river on Earth. The Nile is estimated to be between 5,499 kilometers (3,437 miles) and 6,690 kilometers (4,180 miles) long. The Amazon is estimated to be between 6,259 kilometers (3,903 miles) and 6,800 kilometers (4,225 miles) long. Also, the length of rivers can change as they meander, are dammed, or their deltas grow and recede. Measuring a river is difficult because it is hard to pinpoint its exact beginning and end. For centuries, scientists have debated which river is longer. The longest rivers in the world are the Nile in Africa and the Amazon in South America. A river may be only kilometers long, or it may span much of a continent. Others flow seasonally or during wet years. Rivers are found on every continent and on nearly every kind of land. ![]() A river is a large, natural stream of flowing water. ![]() His interests seem, in the telling of “Hype House,” to be limited to fame. (The breakup happened before the action of the series, and fuels what tension exists.) Chase is a self-styled James Dean for the digital age, with aggressively floppy hair and a mien of muted rebellion. Though Petrou introduces us to the world of “Hype House,” its star is Chase Hudson, a brooding would-be recording artist whose breakup with prominent TikToker Charli D’Amelio, and whose subsequent striking out on his own outside the house, gives this show its first taste of conflict. The cast members’ work is their lives, and vice versa, but they lack the ability to perform for a screen that isn’t on a smartphone, for a length of time greater than sixty seconds. It also makes clear how hard it is to convert one sort of fame to another. The series, with no small effort, establishes that the niche it depicts consists of very well-known people. This makes “Hype House” very likely an introduction to a class of celebrities for some segment of the audience, though it’s hard to imagine who among the uninitiated will keep going once certain unhappy central facts of “Hype House” become clear. Certainly, unlike A-listers whose star quality has an ineffable effect, this crowd can catalyze action from a quantifiable fan base with every move.īut, unlike Lawrence, Hanks, and their peers, TikTok stars would seem to lack that in-between level of awareness: Many people who have not seen “Don’t Look Up” literally know who Lawrence is, whereas to not follow Petrou is quite possibly to be unaware he exists, or that he is working daily to please his massive viewership. Viewed in a strict mathematical sense, he and his peers could be argued to be as famous as Jennifer Lawrence or Tom Hanks or take-your-pick. (To wit: Petrou is introduced with us with a chyron next to his name indicating that he has 8.1 million followers.) And, while Petrou’s work strikes this viewer as a dog whistle only those deeply attuned to the world of TikTok can hear, it’s fair to note its impact. What is the difference between the behavior of sound waves and light waves in this case? The answer is that the wavelengths that make up the light are very short, so that the light acts like a ray. When sound passes through a door, you hear it everywhere in the room and, thus, you understand that sound spreads out when passing through such an opening. What happens when a wave passes through an opening, such as light shining through an open door into a dark room? For light, you expect to see a sharp shadow of the doorway on the floor of the room, and you expect no light to bend around corners into other parts of the room. The new wavefront is a line tangent to the wavelets. Each point on the wavefront emits a semicircular wavelet that moves a distance s = v t s = v t. It will be useful not only in describing how light waves propagate, but also in how they interfere.įigure 17.4 Huygens’s principle applied to a straight wavefront. Huygens’s principle works for all types of waves, including water waves, sound waves, and light waves. The new wavefront is a line tangent to the wavelets and is where the wave is located at time t. These are drawn later at a time, t, so that they have moved a distance s = v t s = v t. Each point on the wavefront emits a semicircular wave that moves at the propagation speed v. A wavefront is the long edge that moves for example, the crest or the trough. The new wavefront is a line tangent to all of the wavelets.”įigure 17.4 shows how Huygens’s principle is applied. Huygens’s principle states, “Every point on a wavefront is a source of wavelets that spread out in the forward direction at the same speed as the wave itself. He used wavefronts, which are the points on a wave’s surface that share the same, constant phase (such as all the points that make up the crest of a water wave). The Dutch scientist Christiaan Huygens (1629–1695) developed a useful technique for determining in detail how and where waves propagate. Although wavelengths change while traveling from one medium to another, colors do not, since colors are associated with frequency. It follows that the wavelength of light is smaller in any medium than it is in vacuum. Where λ λ is the wavelength in vacuum and n is the medium’s index of refraction. As it is characteristic of wave behavior, interference is observed for water waves, sound waves, and light waves. Here we see the beam spreading out horizontally into a pattern of bright and dark regions that are caused by systematic constructive and destructive interference. Passing a pure, one-wavelength beam through vertical slits with a width close to the wavelength of the beam reveals the wave character of light. The laser beam emitted by the observatory represents ray behavior, as it travels in a straight line. In Figure 17.2, both the ray and wave characteristics of light can be seen. Interference is the identifying behavior of a wave. However, when it interacts with smaller objects, it displays its wave characteristics prominently. ![]() As is true for all waves, light travels in straight lines and acts like a ray when it interacts with objects several times as large as its wavelength. The range of visible wavelengths is approximately 380 to 750 nm. Where c = 3.00 × 10 8 c = 3.00 × 10 8 m/s is the speed of light in vacuum, f is the frequency of the electromagnetic wave in Hz (or s –1), and λ λ is its wavelength in m. ![]() George Edward Bomberry, who was a hereditary chief of the Cayuga (Gayogohó:nợ), was born on the Tuscarora Reserve on April 14th, 1849 and was enrolled in the Institute by, at least, 1859 when the Report from the Principal (2) notes that he was 9 years old and was learning “ciphers and simple proportion”.
